The Canadian Connection
Approximately six years ago Mr. Saty Seemungal, his wife Chan and their son David came to The Dorothy Ley Hospice in search of educational resources for their Palliative Care Society. And so began a journey of shared learning, growth and friendship. The likes of such prominent Canadian professionals as the late Dr. Larry Librach, Dr. Leah Steinberg, and Dr. Vince Maida, have visited the Unit, spoke at the annual conference and helped establish best practice within the program. In addition, both Mr. Saty Seemungal and Mr. David Seemungal are esteemed long-standing Rotarians. I am incredibly honoured to be supporting PCSTT in their new projects, including the develop of a Volunteer Program, and a Day Program.
Currently a volunteer program is being developed to help support the staff of the Caura Hospital PCU, as well as offer an opportunity for people serve members of their own community. A Volunteer Coordinator position has been established, with an end-of-life training program soon to follow.
With the understanding that not all individuals living with a life-limiting illness are at near death came the initiative of developing a Day Program. Participants can attend the program and enjoy a social outing with activities and commraderie in a safe and caring environment.
